Meet the Fleet
DSNY has over 3,400 vehicles in its heavy fleet. Find out more about what each of them do below.
Collection Trucks
DSNY has over 2,000 collection trucks. Around 1,400 of those are traditional single bin models, and around 600 are dual bin models.
Mechanical Brooms
DSNY has over 400 mechanical brooms which help keep New York City’s streets sparkling clean. The mechanical brooms use two heavy duty brushes in combination with water to help wash away dirt, leaves, and other hard to remove substances.
Salt Spreaders
Salt Spreaders help keep New York’s streets clear of snow and ice. Salt Spreaders not only help to plow snow and keep roadways clear, they can carry 16-tons of salt and have two tanks of calcium chloride.
Front-End Loaders
Front-end loaders are typically seen after a snowstorm loading snow into snow-melters, however, they are also used behind the scenes at our Marine Transfer Stations. Front end loaders help load refuse into shipping containers where they are shipped by barge and rail to their destination.
EZ Pak
Top loaders, or “EZ Paks”, are collection trucks that load refuse in through the roof rather than at the back. These trucks are used for loading refuse stored in large containers that would otherwise be difficult to unload.
Historic Fleet
DSNY has preserved some older trucks, wagons, and carts that are occasionally put on display. These include a 1950s style “escalator” truck, The Social Mirror, a mirrored collection truck by artist-in-residence Mierle Laderman Ukeles, and some horse-drawn equipment from the turn of the century.
