About this event

Food waste is not a problem unique to New Yorkers. Across the country, cities and states are piloting programs to help their residents combat food waste, from new policies and legislation to innovative public-private partnerships. Hear from the municipal leaders across the U.S. taking on food waste in their own communities.


Moderator: Bridget Anderson, Deputy Commissioner, Recycling and Sustainability, DSNY

Bridget Anderson is the NYC Department of Sanitation’s Deputy Commissioner for Recycling and Sustainability. She is responsible for the planning, implementation, and tracking of DSNY’s sustainability activities including recycling, composting, HHW and e-waste, textile recovery, and waste reduction. Ms. Anderson directs DSNY’s sustainable waste management policy research and program development, and strategic partnerships with the local reuse and community composting sectors. During COVID-19, she advanced “GetFood NYC” Emergency Home Food Delivery serving over 200 million meals.

Natasha Dyer, Senior Recycling Program Coordinator, City of Atlanta, Mayor's Office of Resilience

Natasha Dyer, Senior Recycling Program Coordinator, City of Atlanta | M.A. Urban Sustainability, Antioch University: In her role with the Mayor’s Office of Resilience, Natasha focuses on creating programs that increase wasted food diversion from landfills as part of the City’s Climate Action and Food Access plans. Includes programs that recover edible surplus food to feed food insecure residents and collaborating with external partners to create decentralized composting systems that then benefit municipal urban agriculture.

Erin Hafner, Liaison Officer, Baltimore City Department of Public Works

Erin Hafner works as a Liaison Officer for the Department of Public Works' Bureau of Solid Waste. She works on a variety of recycling and waste reduction programs for residents, schools, and businesses in Baltimore. Recently DPW took over the food matters program and Erin will be responsible for coordinating food waste reduction and compost programs with support from the NRDC.

Alexa Kielty, Residential Zero Waste Coordinator, San Francisco Department of Environment

Alexa Kielty is the Residential Zero Waste Coordinator of the San Francisco Department of the Environment, working on zero waste since 2001. She has designed and executed San Francisco's apartment food scrap composting collection program, implemented the Mandatory Composting and Recycling Ordinance, and developed zero-waste events and textile collection programs. In her free time, she loves being in the Pacific Ocean and hiking in the East Bay of San Francisco Bay Area.

Bryan Johnson, Recycling Coordinator / Public Information Officer, City of Madison, WI Streets Division

Recycling coordinator for the City of Madison, Wisconsin since 2015.
